Researchers at Washington State University used a similar device to measure how officers react to black and white suspects in identical scenarios. But now a new study has found exactly the opposite: The results come from a laboratory project at Washington State University using highly realistic police simulators, in which actors in various scenarios approach and respond to officers on large, high-definition video screens in an attempt to recreate critical situations on the street.
James and Bryan J. Vila — have set up simulations to monitor the differing reactions of police when confronted by white or black suspects. In , a statistical study showed that black people comprised 12 percent of the population but committed 43 percent of the killings of officers. So she has turned to the lab to try to simulate the circumstances officers face on the job, keeping all the factors identical within a scenario — type of weapon, body language and spoken threats, clothes, surroundings — except the race of the suspect.
In two previous tests using police simulators, James monitored the neurophysiological reactions, such as brain waves, of both police officers and civilians to deadly encounters. The participants were almost all white 76 of 80 and nearly all male 71 , which James said was reflective of the Spokane department, and they had an average age of 40 and experience of more than 14 years. The officers came into the lab on four occasions between August and November , before the uproar ignited by police shootings in Ferguson, Mo.
On each day, they would face six scenarios, involving both armed and unarmed suspects who were both black and white. A total of more than 1, scenarios were recorded. The officers were not told the reason for the tests nor was any mention made of race, they wore full uniforms to enhance the realism, and they were paid for their time. In addition, for this study the officers were given a battery of written and oral tests.
A Mediterranean Climate predominates in western Washington, and a much drier semi-arid climate prevails east of the Cascade Range. Major factors determining Washington’s climate include the large semi-permanent high pressure and low pressure systems of the north Pacific Ocean, the continental air masses of North America, and the Olympic and Cascade mountains. In the spring and summer, a high pressure anticyclone system dominates the north Pacific Ocean, causing air to spiral out in a clockwise fashion.
Intercultural dating is both exciting and challenging. Come to Coffee Hour in CUB L46 from 3 – 4 p.m., Friday, September 22, to discuss the complexities of dating someone from another part of the world. Mingle with new people and make ice cream sundaes with the International Center!
Led by the University of Cape Town, the research also sheds light on the climate conditions of our earliest ancestors in the area. Up until now, the lack of dating methods for Cradle fossils made it difficult for scientists to understand the relationship between East and South Africa hominin species. Moreover, the South African record has often been considered undateable compared to East Africa where volcanic ash layers allow for high resolution dating. Using state-of-the-art uranium-lead dating developed at the University of Melbourne, researchers analysed 28 flowstone layers that were found sandwiched between fossil-rich sediment in eight caves across the Cradle.
The results revealed that the fossils in these caves date to six narrow time-windows between 3. By dating the flowstones, we are picking out these times of increased rainfall. We therefore know that during the times in between, when the caves were open, the climate was drier and more like what we currently experience. However, the human fossils are only preserved during the drier periods preserved in the caves, skewing the record of early human evolution.

Solomon Jackson and co-author Brittany Solomon, a graduate student in psychology at Washington University, analyzed data on study participants who took a series of psychological tests to assess their scores on five broad measures of personality — openness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism and conscientiousness. In an effort to gauge whether these spousal personality traits might be seeping into the workplace, they tracked the on-the-job performance of working spouses using annual surveys designed to measure occupational success — self-reported opinions on job satisfaction, salary increases and the likelihood of being promoted.
Workers who scored highest on measures of occupational success tended to have a spouse with a personality that scored high for conscientiousness, and this was true whether or not both spouses worked and regardless of whether the working spouse was male or female, the study found.

Using a new procedure to dose lab rats with cannabis vapor, the researchers found how the drug triggers hunger hormones. They also identified specific brain regions that shift to ‘hungry’ mode while under the influence, according to a report they shared this week at the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior, an international meeting of scientific experts on eating.
A family of compounds called cannabinoids, particularly delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol THC , are responsible for its psychological effects. The ability of THC to stimulate appetite is valuable since many illnesses cause extreme appetite loss which reduces quality of life and slows recovery. For these new studies the scientists designed a vapor exposure system to mimic how people often consume cannabis. This allowed precise control of dosage while rats’ meals were closely monitored throughout the day.
Brief exposure to cannabis vapor stimulated a meal even when rats had recently eaten, suggesting that inhaling cannabis tricks appetite circuits in the brain into hunger mode.

Elizabeth Nolan Brown Jan. The complaint against Woytowicz was found to be without merit, but the school nonetheless dropped Woytowicz as an adjunct assistant professor—another casualty of the convoluted, secretive, and often unfair harassment proceedings that have overtaken U. For 17 years, Woytowicz taught part-time at the university, presiding over more than 65 courses in its chemistry and international relations departments while working full-time elsewhere.
By myriad accounts , “Dr. Cat” was a compelling and effective instructor, winning accolades from her students and awards from the school. But Woytowicz’s good standing with the university started crumbling in January , when one of her former students accused her of sexual harassment. The student, labeled John Doe in court proceedings, had taken chemistry courses with Woytowicz in During this time, he claimed, Woytowicz “overtly pursued a sexual relationship with him and threatened academic and professional consequences if he did not comply,” according to GWU’s motion to dismiss her lawsuit.
Ultimately, “there was insufficient evidence to support a charge of sexual harassment against her,” the motion states. But the school’s Title IX coordinator—the administrator charged with enforcing the federal rule that prohibits sex-based discrimination in education—”determined that Doe had consented to a relationship with Woytowicz,” the motion claims. Woytowicz maintains that she “has never had, or tried to have, a sexual relationship” with any of her students.
She is seeking damages from GWU for violating her constitutional rights to free speech, free association, and due process; violating her right to a employment environment free of sex discrimination; conspiracy to deprive her of constitutionally guaranteed rights; breach of contract; and intentional infliction of emotional distress. In March , Muhammad emailed Woytowicz to say she was under investigation for alleged violations of the school’s “Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence Policy and Procedures.
